Background:

A global CRO (pharmaceutical research) had to close its clinical research units and furlough most employees when COVID-19 hit.

Goals:

To establish policies and processes to bring employees safely back from furlough and to bring research volunteers (patients) safely back into the units.

Results:

For 480 employees across three sites:

  • Developed scheduling tool and implemented tracking method to ensure weekly testing was done on all employees

  • Scheduled and managed shipment of samples to testing lab

  • Communicated to Global Pandemic Committee and tracked all positive test results, exposures, and illnesses

  • Provided functional requirements for telehealth portal for employee testing, performed user acceptance testing, and planned implementation, working with the vendor to resolve issues

  • Created training materials and trained all staff in telehealth portal, and served as the admin, creating accounts for all employees and serving as first line for troubleshooting

  • Scaled up to add 490 more employees across 48 sites in the U.S.

  • Modified processes to apply to research volunteers (approximately 200-250 tests per month)

  • Received the CEO’s Pandemic Response Award

Management Philosophy

“The most meaningful way to succeed is to help others succeed.” -Adam Grant, Organizational Psychologist

“It's simply not possible to quantify all of the contributions that Tammy has made to PPD over the past 30 years. All my words seem grossly insufficient. I feel we need a statue of Tammy in the lobby as a monument and to serve as a vision for what we all should strive for! I don't think I've ever known anyone more organized, or motivated, than Tammy.”

-Judith Jones, Director of Clinical Operations, PPD Phase I
